Ancient Egyptian History

The ancient Egyptian history is divided into 31 dynasties between 3032 B.C. and 332 B.C. - Dynasties are families which hold the ruling power across several generations. From the 4th century B.C. on until 30 A.D. Egypt was ruled by the Greek (Ptolemaic period) and from then on until 395 by the Romans. This history is three times as long as the entire history of the Roman Empire.

Egyptian Hieroglyphs

The pictographic writing, which the Greek called "sacred carvings" was used over three and a half thousand years until their meaning was completely forgotten after the Roman rulership.
Only in 1822 Jean-François Champollion managed to translate them, and today over 7000 different signs can be read.

Afterlife

The Egyptians held a strong belief in the life after death. According to their religious beliefs, the soul would live again in a different world where it would need an intact body (hence their mummification ceremonies) as well as all goods, tools and items of luxury the person had in his real life. Therefore, the tombs where richly equipped with all necessities.

Weighing of the Heart

Before a soul was allowed to enter the afterworld, it had to make a so-called Negative Confession, naming all the sins which it had not committed. Afterwards, the heart of the deceased was weighed against a feather. If it was heavier, the soul would be eaten be the Devourer of Souls - forever preventing the passage to the afterlife.
